Matthew Dean
Matthew Dean found himself belonging to the beats in the middle of a rave at the age of only 15. Taking motivation, but putting his 70’s inspired rock history behind him, he spent hours on end observing friends and fellow Djs, who manoeuvred their suave skills in Matts direction; teaching him the techniques, tweaking his ears to the sound and supplying him with his first set up and bag of plates.
Matthew soon set up a mobile disco, playing first gigs at house parties and school discos, including his own and the wheels were set in 135bpm motion for a career in dance music. His timing was just right, the year was 1999 and everyone was raving like it was the end of the world. He spent his days developing his fetish by fondling the tempos and temperament of various genres and; latching onto the ones that moved him, found himself falling into a progressive state of music. Inspired by Sasha and Digweed at their finest, Matthew pushed on, and was soon pushing buttons with a partner in crime; his good friend Manwell Eff. The two paired up and started to make their way quietly around the Johannesburg club scene, again, observing from a distance before coming in with a bang. Recalling their first memorable gig, a 4 hour daybreak session at the dingy but dear Escobar in Fourways, Matthew says, “We came on at 3am and were surprised to see everyone still rocking on without a care in the world! Two hours in and suddenly, the club had surged with even more people- there was no room to dance! We couldn’t believe it was 7am on a Sunday morning and these people still wanted to jam!” These days Matthew counts Andrew Weatheral, Matthew Dear, Damian Schwartz and Richie Hawtin and the Minus crew among his divine influence, flavouring a garnered taste for Minimal and Techno. Still the watcher, Matthew likes to dig deep, find music from beyond the abyss and entice total dancefloor overhaul when he sees the crowd least suspect it. He continues to make minds wander and asses shake in Johannesburg, South Africa.
